Level 1 (>95% of cases) does not require chains on AWD vehicles at all. OP already said s/he has xDrive. Levels 2 and 3 require chains to be in the vehicle or on the vehicle respectively. If you’re driving in level 2 conditions without snow tires and real chains and instead using socks you’re a fucking idiot.
This is my first winter with it. Previously I have watched lots of youtube vids about xDrive in the snow. I was very excited to see how well it seemed to handle in this weather. It didn't start off the line that good either in the snow. But it is not un-drivable. With snow tires, it was okay for the winters here.
