You shouldn't be getting black smoke during a regen. The exhaust does NOT get up to 600C before the regeneration starts. it'll be 300-400C under normal driving at most. Reaches 600-700C DURING a regen. You also do NOT need to thrash it to initiate a regen. It'll do it even in 6th gear at 1,500rpm. F.

Have noticed recently that my Mondeo does not seem to be doing a regular active regeneration as it used to. When the car was brand new, the ECU would activate a regen every 500 miles - I could almost anticipate it to the mile. However, as the mileage has increased over the past few months(now at almost 13000) it seemed to stop doing this. Basically, what a successful regen needs is a sufficient temperature for a sufficient period of time. Temperature is created by feeding extra fuel into the DPF in the presence of free oxygen. The ECU just monitors the values which it sees. So you may have a fully OK regen, but the ECU may see a low temperature due to a malfunctioning temp sender.
My belief is that this is nonsense. Some DPF's have fluid, but it shouldn't be changed until at least 37500 miles anyway. My belief is that this engine's DPF doesn't have fluid, but injects Diesel into the oil/exhaust (I'm not claiming to be an expert!) to aid the combustion needed for regeneration. Hence there would be no 'fluid' to change.
I did a test. Having driven some 400 km's since the latest regen, I reset the DPF values again. The next regen only took place some 500 km's after the reset - some 900 km's after the last actual regen. So in my case, pressure loss is definitely not the decisive factor for the onset of the regen process. Actually, two factors seem to govern the
